Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found inside many bones, such as the hip and thigh bones. Its main job is to produce blood cells that the body needs to survive. There are two types of bone marrow: red and yellow. Red bone marrow makes red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen around the body, white blood cells help fight infections, and platelets allow blood to clot and stop bleeding. Yellow bone marrow mainly stores fat, but it can change into red marrow if the body needs to make more blood cells, such as after heavy blood loss.
Bone marrow also plays a role in the immune system by producing stem cells that develop into specialised blood cells. Without healthy bone marrow, the body would struggle to get oxygen, fight disease, or heal injuries properly.
